Process of Elimination: Whose biting the bucket?
Posted by unfocused ( 0 comments )
Thursday, April 16, 2009
We have new information of the veteran that will be biting the bucket this finale. Yes, I said biting the bucket, because everything is confusing these days.
The veteran that will die is in the opening credits. From this info, we can eliminate many characters and narrow it down to as many as five, and as little as one. So, let's do that...
M'kay. The facts: the veteran dying is in the opening credits. This means we have Clark, Chloe, Oliver, Lois, and Jimmy who can be considered veterans, no one else in the opening credits was around before this season began.
That veteran is a pivotal character. So we can eliminate Jimmy from the conversation, since he has never been, nor ever will be a pivotal character on Smallville. And we're left with Clark, Chloe, Lois and Oliver.
Next, the veteran will permanently die and stay dead. So we can eliminate Clark and Lois, for the obvious reasons. And because another spoiler that tells us that Lois will have more screen time and her fans will be happy after the finale, leading us to believe we will see a Clois moment and more Clois next season. This leaves us with Chloe and Oliver as potentials for the veteran death.
Now, this is where I get stuck and find the only bump in this process of elimination. Although it's not really a large bump, it's still the only reason I cannot say for sure who will be dying this finale. All I can do from here is compare speculations for these two characters.
Why would Oliver live? Because a new JLA set has been built, and Oliver is the JLA leader. I'm also hearing that season 9 will be focused heavily on the JLA. I'm not going to use the copyright excuse to keep Ollie alive. I can't, this isn't the Green Arrow's show, so DCU might not have a problem with Smallville killing him off. They may have the rights to the character, but that doesn't mean they won't let Smallville do as they please with a secondary character. I don't know.
Why would Chloe live? I think a better question to ask is why would Chloe die? Well because spoilers say she will make a decision that will change her friendship with Clark "forever." And since the only purpose she's ever had on this show has been her friendship with Clark, she'd have no purpose after that friendship ends. Of course, she would have a purpose with the JLA as their Watchtower, but how is that going to work? Clark and the JLA are tight, Clark and Chloe won't be. This adds up to the JLA and Chloe probably won't be tight either. So, the argument that Chloe could be Watchtower in season 9 isn't a very strong one. This brings us back to Chloe not having a purpose on this show anymore.
Also, Allison's contract is a weight that might seriously hold down the show next season if she returns. With the poor economy, the budget cuts, and the actor cuts, the producers will most likely be looking for ways to save money. Killing off the second highest paid actor on the show would accomplish this task pretty well. Why would Oliver die? No idea. Justin Hartley has an easy contract that doesn't affect the show's budget, and he has a fanbase. And if Oliver is killed off, he would need to be replaced by another character in some form, and that would make the writers have to start all over and try to make another character as popular and loved as Oliver Queen is. I don't see that happening. So, I don't see him dying either.
The same cases can be made for Allison Mack, except her contract isn't easy at all. And it might be the deciding factor in the choice to keep Allison or not. But I still cannot decide myself. I'm leaning more towards Chloe, but it can only be either her or Oliver that will be biting the bucket May 14th.
This is the way the world ends.

With a BANG!
Alright, so latest rumors are saying we will indeed see an epic battle come May 14th. Sets are being built to be destroyed, people are going to die, others are going to leave town, while even more are coming to witness the event and join in. The speculation is running through everyone's minds, will loyal sidekicks betray their heroes? Will heroes be tested and equaled by villains? Will more questions come and leave us hanging for months before anything is answered?
No one knows for sure. One thing we do know, is that the May 14th season finale was rewritten and given an extra week to reshoot. We don't know exactly what has been changed, or how much of it, but my guess is it was something very important. Important enough to warrant a last second change. Does this mean our previous finale spoilers lose all credibility? I think so. Right now, I'm not believing any spoiler that came before the rewrite.
Any of it, or ALL of it, could have been changed. So, this means if Tess was planned to die prior to the rewrite, she might now live. If Chloe was staying, she might now be leaving. Of course, I could be blowing all this out of proportion and the rewrite may have been a last minute change in cast. Or something else that is not as significant as a death change. I don't know. I don't trust anyone.
But, this is exciting, nonetheless. I'm happy there was a rewrite. I've been feeling a little over spoiled this season. And it feels great to finally be unsure of something. I think I should duck and run while I can before another major spoiler comes my way and ruins the finale even more for me.
Anyway. I hear Davis won't be with us much longer. Not because he is dying, but because Doomsday will emerge and take full control. Well, we all knew that already, but I'm mentioning it because there is a possibility that the epic battle will be two episodes long! I hope it will be, but I'm not counting on it. The budget problems affect everything, and unless the showrunners have been pocketing the change from each episodes low use in budget, I doubt we'll be getting a miraculous upgrade in fight sequences, special effects, or overall quality of the actual battle.
But from the recent news that the battle will in fact be "huge" (a spoiler from Ausiello, whom I am still angry with) I can at least expect something that remotely resembles what anyone could consider "huge." And that would be enough for me. Maybe it won't be a two-episode war, it for sure won't be as epic as the comicbook battle (where pencils and inks cost a helluva lot less than actors and graphics), but I am optimistic that these new showrunners, whom I have put my trust in many times this season and for the most part still do, will deliver.
Heck, I defended them when we first heard Doomsday was going to be on the show. And now look at us all. Even those fans that hated the fact that Doomsday was coming to Smallville are, along with myself, excited and anticipating this epic battle. As they say, "this is Smallville, anything can happen (well not anything)" and so it doesn't have to mimic the comicbook battle at every point. It can be different, so, we can still be surprised and characters we least expect can still die, or leave.
Too much typing. Doomsday SMASH!
Chloe lives... Well, maybe.

Michael Ausiello, whom I am currently angry with for his mind games, has updated one of his spoilers. It seems Chloe Sullivan may live past season 8 after all, unlike the previous hints he gave that she might die by seasons end. So, let's set aside the possibility that he may still be playing his mind games and consider that he is correct. Chloe lives.
This keeps the possibility of my theory open. Sort of. My theory works better if Chloe dies, but it can still work if she lives and it looks like I may be right. My theory is that Chloe was going to die in the finale, Doomsday. And her season 7 meteor powers that were assumed gone will be making a brief return. Chloe, in season 7, had two powers. One allowed her to take another persons injury, as far as death, and switch it with her health. This means she can bring a person back to life, but she will suffer that persons fate. Her second power allowed her to heal from that injury over time, it would even resurrect her from death.
Now, she doesn't have her healing power anymore, that much is obvious because she cannot heal anyone anymore. But we'd never know if she lost her phoenix power until she dies. She can't be resurrected unless she is dead. And I think she may still have a bit of that power lingering in her, but in some different form. The Brainiac infection she suffered altered her powers, but we do not know the extent at which it did. There is a chance that her phoenix power will bring her back to life in a certain way, such as a spirit. Maybe even a spirit with new powers similar to her old powers.
This theory has the possibility to make many people excited and happy about the Chloe character. It will grant the wish of some of her fans that Chloe become a superhero (a thought I once laughed at until I realized the potential). It will make other Chloe fans happy that she lives and earns a better, far more valuable life outside of being a sidekick. And it could make general Smallville fans happy because she would be a Smallville original superhero and may even get a better chance at joining the comics.
Now that Chloe might live, you'd think this theory is out of question. Well, it looks like the writers may be leading this way anyway, sans Chloe's death. She rejoined the Justice League as Watchtower, the headquarters operative... the playmaker for the League when they are in the field. She decided to leave her old life behind, which has become crappy. Although I do believe she needs to work on her marriage a little more before ditching it for a serial killing mass murdering world destructor. She can hold marriage life along with heroism, or one would think. Aside from all of the morally questionable ethics, I think Chloe always fit in well with the League. It's not like we haven't seen a Leaguer stray down a dark path or choose the wrong side to fight on before.
So, here's hoping the writers decide to actualy make their own mythology and give us a character worth remembering for more than just being Jimmy's wife or Clark's friend, or even Doomsday's dinner.

Here is a snippet of the Eternal review written by cloisthelegendbegins. Read the entire review here.
As the transformation has started, Davis needs to find a victim to keep the monster at bay, so we next see him dragging a shovel across a muddy field, getting in his vehicle and kissing a cross as he asks for forgiveness. Then his phone rings and it's Tess. What's the prayer for dismembering a body she asks as he turns on the headlights to find her standing in the field? He doesn't get a chance to answer, because it turns out the Tess Mercer judiciary system is as harsh as Davis Bloom's and with the push of a button, he's blown sky high. Man that woman is COLD.

The latest, most current coverage for each story arc.
The Red Blue Blur
No RBB this episode. And the only talk about it was Tess suggesting to Clark that the Red Blue Blur hasn't been doing his job because Doomsday is still out there. Tess knows a lot about Clark's secret, and she seems to know that he is destined to be great. Let's hope for some more RBB action in the coming episodes.
Lois & Clark
No Lois & Clark either. I'm tired of only seeing Lois for a few episodes, she really doesn't get enough chance to shine. Next week we will be having a lot of Lois, and I'm looking forward to it. It seems to be a fun episode, like Hex, so bring it on.
Doomsday/Davis/Chloe
Much development in this story arc. We find out Davis' true origins that he arrived on Earth with Clark. A huge retcon, and I love it. For 70 years it's been told that the Last Son of Krypton came to Earth alone, as a baby. But now, by Smallville's own mythology, Doomsday came down along with Clark in that hellfire, and with a completely different purpose. I find it amazing that Clark was sent to protect Earth, and Davis was sent to destroy it. But they were both sent together. As Clark suggested to Davis that they could have been brothers, it seems in a way, they are. Davis again proves to be immortal and grows stronger with every death. He died twice in this episode, once when Tess blew up the van he was in, and again when Chloe released Kryptonite liquid on him to stop him from changing into Doomsday. So we know he is becoming stronger as this season progresses, making that final epic battle more meaningful. Because Clark won't be going up against a weak version of the Doomsday we all know of. He will be fighting a power Doomsday who has died and evolved stronger many times. We finish with Davis coming back to life after that final death. He has nowhere to go but to Chloe's. She is the only one that can suppress the beast in him now. He used to be able to do it with murdering people to feed the hunger before Doomsday would take control, but that eventually drew him closer to accepting what he really is. Now that Chloe is his last chance at keeping the beast away, he asks her to stay with him. She makes the choice to accept, and this is the start of Smallville's final arc of season 8.
The Green Arrow/JLA
No GA or the JLA this eppy. But we do get a mention of Oliver! After Davis dies by means of kryptonite, Clark has Ollie "take care" of it. So we are to assume that Oliver buried the body or disposed of it in some way. Maybe we will see some more GA next episode, since Davis came back to life, Oliver should take notice.
Chloe & Jimmy
Where we stand with Chimmy? Well, seems like Chloe is moving on pretty fast from her marriage. "It was just dinner." And you are just married, Chloe. Another major ouch is that Chloe finds out that Jimmy was right about Davis. The whole fight that broke Chimmy up, and Chloe turns out to be wrong. Well, she was wrong to begin with, but at least now she understands that. We also hear about his hurtful emails. He doesn't want any communication with her, which could be hinting that Chimmy is indeed over for good, or at least until Chloe's JLA story arc is over. It does seem convenient to remove Jimmy from his relationship with Chloe, since she will be pretty busy the rest of this season.
Tess & the Injustice Gang
So, Tess is neck deep in the Clark/Doomsday deal. She's actually trying to orchestrate it. I for one think she is in over her head. But we'll see. My speculation is that she is pretending to care about Clark fulfilling his destiny, and so wants Doomsday to come about and the epic battle happen right in front of her eyes. BUT, and here's the underlying intentions, Tess needs a test. Her team is about ready to go and she needs combatants to see where they are in that respect. Any great team needs a great battle, and Doomsday would be the perfect battle, in her eyes, for her League. Of course, I may be wrong and Tess actually releases her League against the Justice League. But I am leaning towards the assumption that she wants to team her league up with Clark and the JLA to battle Doomsday. Her team can go bad at anytime, but Tess herself is not a villain in a true sense. Her roads are paved with good intentions. So she could very well intend to make a superhero team that inadvertently goes bad. We'll see.

The latest, most current coverage for each story arc.
The Red Blue Blur
Well, we didn't have any RBB this episode, and Clark forgot who he was for a minute. But things got back to normal, eventually. The RBB is still running around saving people on a nightly basis, as we seen in the previous episode, Turbulence. The phone booth scene in that one was pretty awesome, makes us want more RBB! Looks like John Jones is feeding him info about crimes, that's pretty cool to see them working together this way since Jones can't be in many episodes.
Lois & Clark
This is weird. It's not really Lois and Clark, it just looks that way. But the little L&C we got in Hex wasn't so bad. We learned that they still keep in touch, so there aren't many hard feelings between them from the previous episode (when Clark stood Lois up on that fake date). Still, Lois isn't afraid to let Clark know that she did in fact feel stood up by him missing their fake date. Which is funny because Lois was supposedly out chasing a lead and couldn't show anyway (her lie to Clark).
Doomsday/Davis
There was no Doomsday or Davis in Hex. I'm guessing Tess is holding the story until there is more evidence about Davis, then she'll print it out. But right now, Jimmy sent her evidence that Davis is the serial killer that's been lurking around the city for months. Looks like his story is going to have a major break out soon.
The Green Arrow
Ah, finally some Green Arrow action. In this one, he makes a new friend that strings him up with chains. Zatanna is a welcome addition to the show, and she and Oliver make a good pairing. We learn that Ollie is afraid of being caught for Lex's murder as the case for that murder is still on. Looks like Toyman didn't take the fall after all.
Chloe & Jimmy
Looks like Chloe wants to move on from her past. Could this include Jimmy? Well we know that these two have recently had a major fight, with Jimmy really let it all out. Years of built up jealousy and insecurity just had to be released. Too bad it may have damaged his marriage beyond recognition. This could very well be the end of Chimmy. But that may also spell a new beginning for Chloe as the Justice Leagues permanent Watchtower.
Tess & the Injustice League
No Tess, No Injustice League this week. This week was mostly just Chlark/Clois and Green Arrow/fishnets. Where we stand with Tess and her league? Well we haven't gotten many updates, but we are to assume that she has a handful of members ready to do.. something. Stay tuned, this story arc will become a major one soon, hopefully, lol. After so many years of being teased with Level 33.1, I'm looking for the payoff. And I'm expecting it very soon.

Here is a snippet of the Hex review by Cedric, another really great review. Click here to view the entire review in it's original form on the KryptonSite message board.
All in all: What can be said about this episode that hasn't been said. What we got was 40 minutes of Smallville at its highest form. An episode that makes you feel good about the characters you love, and the show as a whole. No angsty feelings, no major disappointments, no critical flaws that leave you scratching your head. None of that. The episode delivered on so many levels that each time I rewatch it I find something new to love. There are so, SO many little things that makes Hex stand apart. I tried to touch on all of them in this review but I'm sure there were many that I left out as well. Its a testament to the superb writing of Bryan Miller, the best writer on this show.
If Chloe dies, will Smallville gain more fans?

Some people are saying that Smallville will lose much of their audience if Chloe Sullivan is killed off in the season 8 finale. That theory should be taken with only a grain of salt since it has only come from Chloe fans that say they will stop watching if Chloe is killed off. But I do believe Smallville will lose fans in that case. Smallville lost fans when Lana left, when Lex left, and when Kara left. So it's safe to say that they will lose fans if Chloe leaves. But there is just as credible reason to believe that Smallville will also gain fans if she leaves.
Smallville lost a lot of fans when Chloe began being written as if she was smarter and better than Clark while teaching him how to do things right, and doing just about everything else for him. It's in my opinion that the number of losses due to that sad fact is probably going to prove greater than the loss of some Chloe fans if she were to die. So, in turn, the gain that the show will get from Chloe's death has every potential of being at the very least equal to the loss of some of her fans, if she dies.
It wasn't a coincidence that the shows ratings began to fall once Chloe learned Clark's secret and became his know-it-all, do-it-all, smarter-than-all sidekick. The way she was written was to make her character look glorious and great, but unfortunately it came at the expense of Clark's character, and, ultimately, many fans.
What's worse is while Al Gough & Miles Millar were worshiping the Chloe character, they were also worshiping the Lana character. Clark had no chance, and his character development came to a complete stop for Chloe and Lana. From seasons 5 through 7, the character development for Clark Kent (which is what this show was originally about in the first place) was on hold for other characters. The writers metaphorically tied Clark to the barn so he couldn't go anywhere. He stopped gaining abilities, something he did in each of the first three seasons. He has only gained a single ability since. And it was CHLOE that discovered the ability for him.
Clark's development was put on hold, probably for other reasons. But while it was on hold, he was used to make the other characters look good, which ended up making Clark himself look bad. I've met so many fans that hate the character of Clark Kent because "he's not my Superman," or "he's too lazy and doesn't want to leave the barn or get off Lana," or "why is he taking so long to accept his destiny and become Superman?" Well, the answer is because his character development was put on hold for 3 years, during which time the other main characters of Lana, Chloe and Lex were spotlighted, with Lois being kept on the backburner and the Green Arrow doing much of the superheroism on the show. With Lex's character brilliantly falling from grace, Chloe's character being glorified since Clark could not be most of the time, and Lana's character just getting so much needless attention from the producers, we had an underused, worn down semblance of a Superman.
Well, that was before season 8 began. We now have a confident Clark Kent working side by side with Lois Lane at the Daily Planet. He's a nightly savior for the people of Metropolis. Is it a coincidence that THIS Clark Kent, the Clark Kent we should have gotten 3 years ago, is here now while Lana is gone and Chloe is finally being used as something other than Clark's know-it-all, do-it-all, smarter-than-all sidekick? Of course it's not. He is a better character when he is progressing into the iconic hero. And now that he is, removing the final piece that held Clark back all those years... will gain the show some of those fans back.
But that's if Chloe Sullivan does indeed get's killed off. And this is just my opinion on the matter.
